Ajax the great - Ajax the great Ajax, or Aias (Of the earth) son of Telamon, king of Salamis, a legendary hero of ancient Greece. To distinguish him from Ajax, son of Oileus, he was called "Ajax the Great" or "Telamonian Ajax". In Homer's Iliad he is described as of great stature and colossal frame, second only to Achilles in strength and bravery, and the 'bulwark of the Achaeans'. He is not wounded in any of the battles described in the Iliad, and he is the only principal character on either side who does not receive personal assistance from any of the gods who take part in the battles. During the Trojan War, Ajax fought Hector while Achilles sulked over an argument with Agamemnon. Ajax wounded but did not kill.

James Shirley - 1666), English dramatist, was born in London. He belonged to the great period of English dramatic literature, but, in Lamb's words, he "claims a place among the worthies of this period, not so much for any transcendent genius in himself, as that he was the last of a great race, all of whom spoke nearly the same language and had a set of moral feelings and notions in common." His career of play writing extended from 1625 to the suppression of stage plays by parliament in 1642. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' school, St John's College, Oxford, and Catherine Hall, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in or before 1618. His first poem, Echo, or the Unfortunate Lovers (of which no copy is known, but which is probably the.
Helen - decided to hold onto her until she was old enough to marry. Pirithous chose Persephone. They left Helen with Theseus' mother, Aethra and travelled to the underworld, domain of Persephone and her husband, Hades. Hades pretended to offer them hospitality and set a feast; as soon as the pair sat down, snakes coiled around their feet and held them there. When it was time for Helen to marry, many Greek kings and princes came to seek her hand or sent emissaries to do so on their behalf. Among the contenders were Odysseus, Menestheus, Ajax the Great, Patroclus and Idomeneus, but the favourite was Menelaus who did not come in person but was represented by his brother Agamemnon, both of whom were in exile, having fled Thyestes. All but Odysseus brought many.
Ugo Foscolo - Italian patriot just as the hero of Goethe places before us the too delicate sensitiveness embittering and at last cutting short the life of a private German scholar. The story of Foscolo, like that of Goethe, had a groundwork of melancholy fact. Jacopo Ortis had been a real personage; he was a young student of Padua, and committed suicide there under circumstances akin to those described by Foscolo. At this period Foscolo's mind appears to have been. only too familiar with the thought of suicide. Cato and the many classical examples of self-destruction scattered through the pages of Plutarch appealed to the imaginations of young Italian patriots as they had done in France to those of the heroes and heroines of the Gironde. In the case of Foscolo, as in that.

Achilles - pretending to be a beggar and asked Achilles to help heal his wound. Acchilles refused, claiming to have no medical knowledge. Alternatively, Telephus held Orestes for ransom, the ransom being Achilles' aid in healing the wound. Odysseus reasoned that the spear had inflicted the wound and the spear must be able to heal it. Pieces of the spear were scraped off onto the wound, and Telephus healed. This is an example of sympathetic magic. Achilles in the Court of Lycomedes An oracle, Calchas, stated that the Greeks would not win without Achilles but his mother, Thetis, knew he would die there. His mother thus hid him at the court of Lycomedes in Scyros, disguised as a woman. There he had an affair with Deidamea resulting in a child, Neoptolemus. He was.
Teucer - son of Hesione and Telamon, Teucer fought with his half-brother, Ajax the great, in the Trojan War. His daughter, Batea, married Dardanus. This Teucer fought on the side of the Greeks against the Trojans. Son of Scamander and Icaea, Teucer was the legendary ancestor of the Trojans. Hence Trojans were sometimes referred to as "Teucrians". This Teucer fought on the side of the Trojans against the Greeks. (In Apollodorus's Bibliotheke III, xii, 1.) Alternative: Teucris.

Tyndareus - Tyndareus received them and Agamemnon married Clytemnestra. Helen, however, had many more suitors for she was the most beautiful woman in the world. When it was time for her to marry, many Greek kings and princes came to seek her hand or sent emissaries to do so on their behalf. Among the contenders were Odysseus, Menetheus, Ajax the great, Patroclus and Idomeneus, but the favourite was Menelaus who, according to some sources, did not come in person but was represented by his brother Agamemnon. All but Odysseus brought many and rich gifts with them. Tyndareus would accept none of the gifts, nor would he send any of the suitors away for fear of offending them and giving grounds for a quarrel. Odysseus promised to solve the problem in a satisfactory manner.
Salamis Island - which it was mentioned in Homers writings. It also could have been named after Cychreus's mother (Cychreus was the first king of the island). Salamis island is known for the Battle of Salamis, and as birthplace of Ajax the great and Euripides. In modern times, it is home to a Greek naval base which serves as headquarters for the Greek navy. The harbor was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in 1941, sinking the Kilkis (formerly the USS Idaho (BB-24)) and the Lemnos (formerly USS Mississippi (BB-23)). Sophocles - an Athenian dramatist and politician. He is known as the second of the three great Greek tragedians, preceded by Aeschylus and followed by Euripides. He distinguished himself at an early age: At the Athenian celebration of the victory at Salamis (480 B.C.), the 16-year-old Sophocles was the leader of the chorus of dancing and singing naked boys. A long line of scholars, beginning with Aristotle, considered Sophocles to be the greatest playwright among the ancients. He also won the Festival of Dionysus, an ancient dramatic festival, more times than any other. His most famous works are his tragedies about Oedipus, known collectively, due to their setting, as the three Theban plays: Oedipus the King (also known as Oedipus Rex) Oedipus at Colonus Antigone Only four more of his many dozens of.
Stan Freberg - products as "Puffed Grass" ("It's good for Bossie, it's good for me and you!"), "Food" ("If you haven't any teeth you can gum your food with your gum, gum, gummy-gum gum"), and himself ("Freberg - the foaming comedian! Bobba bobba bom bom bom" - a parody of a well-known Ajax Laundry Detergent commercial). The lack of sponsorship forced the cancellation of the show after a run of only fifteen episodes. Freberg continued to skewer the advertising industry, however, producing Green Chri$tma in 1959, a scathing indictment of the overcommercialization of the holiday. Green Chri$tma$ foreshadowed 1961's Stan Freberg Presents The United States of America, Part One in that both combined dialog and song in almost musical-like style. (One can almost imagine John Hancock and Ben Franklin performing the big Broadway finish.
Phoenix (Iliad) - Iliad, Phoenix is one of Achilles' men who goes with Odysseus and Ajax the great to urge him to re-enter battle, giving the most passionate speech of the three. There is no doubt that this was a later addition to the epic, since Achilles continually talks to his guests using a special dual verb form, not plural. Hesiod also claimed that Phoenix was the father of Adonis with Aephesiboea. A different Phoenix in Greek mythology was a son of Agenor and Telephassa. When his sister, Electra was kidnapped, Phoenix and his brothers, Cadmus and Cilix went searching for her. Phoenix eventually settled down and founded the country Phoenicia..
Phony War - May 10, 1940, with Nazi-Germany's assault on the Benelux countries. In German the term Sitzkrieg is used for the same period. The term came into general use because although the great powers of Europe had declared war on one another, neither side had yet committed to launching a significant attack and there was little fighting. In the center of public interest during the Phony War stood the Winter War following Soviet's assault on Finland on November 30th, 1939. Public opinion, particularly in France and Britain, found it easy to side emotionally with democratic Finland, and demanded from their governments effective actions in support of "the brave Finns" against the larger Bolshevist Soviet Union. As a consequence, the Soviet Union was excluded from the League of Nations, and a proposed Franco-British expedition.
Neoptolemus - King of Scyros. During that time, he had an affair with the princess, Deidamea, who gave birth to Neoptolemus. Ten years later in the war, after the death of Achilles and Ajax the great and no signs of victory for the Greeks, the Greeks desperately captured the Trojan seer, Helenus, and forced him to tell them under what conditions could they take Troy. Helenus revealed to them that they could defeat Troy if they could achieve the poisonous arrows of Heracles (then in Philoctetes' possession); steal the Palladium (which led to the building of the famous wooden horse of Troy); and persuade Achilles' son to join the war. The Greeks made haste to fetch Neoptolemus at Scyros, and brought him to Troy. In contrast to Achilles, a noble warrior who had.
