Anna Leonowens - Anna Leonowens Anna Leonowens (1834 - 1914) is chiefly famous for being the British governess in The King and I. Although she claimed to have been born Anna Harriette Crawford in Caernarfon, Wales, recent investigations discovered no record of the birth, and it is now thought that her Welsh blood was limited to one grandparent. The official version of her story says that at the age of fifteen, she travelled to India to live with her mother, who had remarried after the death of Anna's father, an army captain, in action. She had spent the intervening years at boarding school and staying with relatives. It is now thought that she may have been born in India, of mixed-race parentage, and that her maiden name was Anna.

The King and I - King and I is a musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II with a script based on Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. The plot comes from the autobiographical story of Anna Leonowens who became governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The musical was first staged in 1951 with the hitherto unknown Yul Brynner as the King Rama IV of Thailand and Gertrude Lawrence as Anna.
