F2H Banshee - F2H Banshee The McDonnell F2H Banshee was a military carrier-based jet fighter aircraft, used by the US Navy from 1951 to 1959 and by the Royal Canadian Navy from 1955 until 1962. It was a development of the FH-1 Phantom, although it was being planned before the Phantom went into production. The basic design was for an enlarged and more powerful Phantom, with new Westinghouse turbojets providing almost twice the power (3,000 lb each against 1,600 lb in the Phantom), an increased fuel load, a move away from the WW II standard 0.50 inch guns to 20 mm cannon, and addition capability to carry bombs, rockets or missiles as well. A mock-up of the new fighter, designated XF2D-1, was completed in April 1945. The project survived.
HMCS Bonaventure - flight deck and steam catapult. The Bonaventure - named after an island bird sanctuary in the Gulf of St. Lawrence - was commissioned into the Canadian Navy on January 17, 1957, upon completion of its refit and modernization. The navy's new flagship carried a force of about 34 McDonnell Douglas F2H-3 Banshee jet fighters, Grumman CS2F Tracker ASW aircraft (built by de Havilland in Toronto), and Sikorsky HO4S helicopters. Even with the refit, landing a Banshee on the Bonaventure's relatively short deck was pushing the envelope. While Canadian pilots did it routinely, American Banshee pilots flatly refused to even attempt landing on the Bonaventure during joint operations. The wide-winged Trackers were also a tight fit. Banshee - Banshee The banshee in Irish mythology is derived from the Gaelic bean-sidhe (Mod. Ir. "bean sí"), meaning "spirit woman". They are remenants of the Tuatha de Danaan . McDonnell Douglas - had established a USAAF think-tank, a group that would later become the RAND Corporation Douglas continued to develop new aircraft, including the successful four-engined DC-6 (1946) and their last prop-driven commercial aircraft the DC-7 (1953).
