François Mauriac - François Mauriac François Mauriac (October 11- 1885 - September 1, 1970) was a French author. He is acknowledged as one of the greatest Roman Catholic writers of the 20th century. Born François Charles Mauriac in Bordeaux, Gironde department, Aquitaine, France. He studied literature at the University of Bordeaux, graduating in 1905, after which he moved to Paris to prepare for entrance in the École des Chartes. He remained at the school only a few months after making the decision to devote himself entirely to writing. His first volume of poems, Les Mains jointes (Clasped Hands), was published in 1909 and although it gained some attention in the literary community, it was more than ten years before he came into any public prominence. His writing career was interrupted.
Jean-François Marmontel - movement. He was born of poor parents at Bort, in Cantal. After studying with the Jesuits at Mauriac, he taught in their colleges at Clermont and Toulouse; and in 1745, acting on the advice of Voltaire, he set out for Paris to try for literary success. From 1748 to 1753 he wrote a succession of tragedies (Denys le Tyran (1748); Aristomene (1749); Cleopâtre (1750); Heraclides (1752); Egyptus (1753)), which, though only moderately successful on the stage, secured Marmontel's introduction into literary and fashionable circles. He wrote a series of articles for the Encyclopédie evincing considerable critical power and insight, which in their collected form, under the title Elements de Litterature, still rank among the French classics. He also wrote several comic operas, the two best of which probably are Sylvain (1770).

After the war, he first lived in France, where he was encouraged by Nobel laureate Francois Mauriac to write about his experiences during the ordeal. Wiesel did, his most famous work is probably Night although he has been quite prolific, producing 36 works. Later he settled in the US and served as chairman for the Presidential Commission on the Holocaust (later renamed U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council) from 1978 to 1986. He received the Congressional Gold Medal of Achievement in 1985 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. He published his memoirs in 1995.
