Culture of Denmark - be seen as a deliberate attempt to distinguish oneself from others may be viewed with hostility. This characteristic is called Janteloven or Jante's Law by Danes. Cultural Achievements Denmark has a rich cultural and intellectual heritage. The astronomical discoveries of Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) and the brilliant contributions to atomic physics of Niels Bohr (1885-1962) indicate the range of Danish scientific achievement. The fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75), the philosophical essays of Søren Kierkegaard (1813-55), and the short stories of Karen Blixen (penname Isak Dinesen, 1885-1962) have earned international recognition, as have the symphonies of Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). Danish applied art and industrial design have won awards for excellence. The name of Georg Jensen (1866-1935) is known worldwide for outstanding modern design in silver, and "Royal Copenhagen" is among the.
Steen Eiler Rasmussen - Fine Arts, and a prolific writer of books and essays. Like his compatriots Hans Christian Andersen and Johannes Vilhelm Jensen he travelled extensively, and his observations often became basis for his writings. His bibliography (1973) lists 536 items. One of his most important books was London. It was first published in Danish in 1934, in English (as London, the Unique City) in 1937. When this edition was re-issued in 1948, Rasmussen had added two Postscripts: "For English readers only", and "For American readers only". A shorter version was published as a paperback in 1960. Other influential books by Steen Eiler Rasmussen are Towns and Buildings (1951), and Experiencing Architecture (1959). It has been stated that every English and American city-planner knows his "Rasmussen"..

Matres lectionis - Middle Kingdom there were some cases of matres lectionis, i. e. consonant graphemes which were used to transcribe vowels in foreign words, namely in Punic (Jensen 290, Naveh 62), Aramaic and Hebrew (he, waw, jod; sometimes even aleph; Naveh 62). Naveh (ibid.) notes that the earliest Aramaic and Hebrew documents already used matres lectionis. Some scholars argue that therefore the Greeks must have borrowed their alphabet from the Arameans. But the practice has older roots: the Semitic cuneiform alphabet of Ugarit (13th ct. BC) already has matres lectionis (Naveh 138). Bibliography: Jensen, Hans. 1970. Sign Symbol and Script. Latin alphabet - Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z The alphabet used for the Latin language had no J, U, or W. Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 History 2 Use in other languages 3 Collating in other languages 4 References History The Latin alphabet derives mainly from the Etruscan alphabet. According to Hammarström (in Jensen 521), the letters for B, D, O, X hail from a Southern Italian Greek alphabet. However, there are Etruscan abecedaria with B, D, O, X (Sampson 108). Rix (203) claims that the sound values of those letters in Latin are to be attributed to Greek influence, the letters themselves were probably all present when the Romans took over the alphabet from the Etruscans (Wachter 33). It is uncontested that the alphabet is mainly of Etruscan.
Leipzig Declaration - Singer removed some, but not all, of the discredited signatures. The SEPP's position is that "a few of the original signers did not have the 'proper' academic credentials - even though they understand the scientific climate issues quite well. To avoid this kind of smear, we want to restrict the Leipzig Declaration to signers with impeccable qualifications." The SEPP now provides considerably more information about each signer on their website, and additionally lists the weather presenters separately from the other "scientists." However, further questions have been raised about the remaining signatures. Use of the declarations The declarations have been widely cited by conservative voices in the "sound science" movement. It has been cited by Fred Singer in editorial columns appearing in hundreds of conservative websites and major publications, including The Wall.
