The section beneath the Thames was originally a foot tunnel built by Marc Isambard Brunel between 1825 and 1843, one of several Thames foot tunnels. It is a deep-level "tube" line which runs from the south-east to the north-west of London. Originally called the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway, the contraction "Bakerloo" rapidly caught on, and the official name was changed. Beyond its original terminus of Baker Street, the Bakerloo was extended via interchanges with the GWR at Paddington and the Great Central at Marylebone to Queens Park, where it joined the "DC Lines" of the London and North Western Railway and ran alongside the LNWR's main line as far as Watford Junction.
