Kahoolawe - Kahoolawe Simple English Kaho'olawe is the smallest of the 8 main volcanic islands in the Hawaiian Islands. It is located west of Maui and south of Lana'i and is 11 miles long by 6 miles across (45 sq. miles area). The highest point, Lua Makika, is 1,477 feet above sea level. The island is rather dry because its low elevation fails to generate much orographic precipitation from the northeastern Trade Winds. Kaho'olawe was used as a gunfire and aerial bombardment target, and a defense training area by the United States Navy from around 1941 until May 1994. Popular sentiment in Hawai'i against this practice eventually prevailed, and the Navy has been attempting to complete a cleanup of unexploded ordnance from the island. Ordnance remains buried or.

Flag of Hawaii - King Kamehameha designed a new Hawaiian flag that included both a small Union Jack and the stripes from the U.S. flag. He was thus able to show his kingdom's friendship to both nations without offending either. Unlike the U.S. flag, the stripes on the Hawaiian flag are red, white and blue, and there are eight stripes for the eight major inhabitable islands of Hawaii: Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe..

USS Tennessee (BB-43) Part 3 - Tennessee, with California (BB-44), Maryland (BB-46), and Colorado (BB-45), was assigned to Fire Support Group One (TG 52.17) under Rear Admiral Jesse Oldendorf. The Northern Attack Force assembled at Hawaii in mid-May 1944. After rehearsals off Maui and Kahoolawe, Fire Support Group One sailed for Kwajalein while the transports staged at Eniwetok. On 10 June 1944, Tennessee and her task group departed Kwajalein, bound for Saipan. Early on 13 June, as the force approached the Marianas, signs of Japanese activity began to appear, A patrol plane reported sighting a surfaced submarine some 20 miles ahead and attacked it. Another plane shot down a landbased Mitsubishi G4M Betty which had been trailing along ten miles astern of the ships. Another submarine contact was reported to port of the formation, and screening destroyers.

Kamohoalii - a son of Haumea and Kane Milohai. Kamohoali swam in the area around Maui and Kahoolawe. When a ship was lost at sea, Kamohoali shook his tail in front of the fleet and the kahuna would feed him "awa" (a name for kava, a narcotic drink), and Kamohoali would guide the men home. Alternative: Kalahiki (Kahoolawe).
