She worked with the OSS Emergency Sea Rescue Equipment Section in Washington, DC for a year, developing shark repellent, and was then posted to Kandy, Ceylon (where she met her future husband Paul Cushing Child), and to China, where she was Head of the Registry of OSS Secretariat. History of Sri Lanka - Sinhalese rules of Tamil kingdoms and vice-versa. Outside influences The island's location in the middle of the Indian Ocean has made it a popular trading stop through the ages. Roman sailors called the island "Taprobane." Arab traders knew it as "Serendip" (derived from the Sanskrit name Sinhala-dweepa), which became the root of the word "serendipity." It is from this contact that the island's mostly-converted Muslim population comes. Beginning in 1505, Portuguese traders, in search of cinnamon and other spices, seized the island's coastal areas and introduced Catholicism. The Dutch supplanted the Portuguese in 1658. Although the British ejected the Dutch in 1796, Dutch law remains an important part of Sri Lankan jurisprudence. In 1815, the British defeated the king of Kandy, last of the native rulers, and created the Crown Colony.

In 1831 he received the G.C.B., and from 1831 to 1853 he was commander in-chief in India, with the local rank of general. On his return home, after two unsuccessful attempts to secure the seat, he became M.P. for Sudbury in 1837, but he died in the following year. Sir Edward Barnes' portrait was painted,.

Tom Wolfe - the top of the letter and published the notes as the article. This was the birth of the New Journalism, in which reporters were cut loose from journalistic conventions of the past and allowed to use all sorts of literary techniques, including free association, italics, exclamation marks (even multiple exclamation marks). In 1965 a collection of his articles in this style was published under the title The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby and Wolfe was on his way. He wrote on popular culture, architecture, and politics, whatever interested him. His defining work from this era is The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, which epomitised the decade for many. Although a conservative in many ways and certainly not a hippie, he became one of the notable figures of the 1960s. In 1979 Wolfe.
Phil Spector - It Be. Spector is widely regarded as more than a little eccentric, descending into many conflicts with the artists, songwriters, and promoters that he worked with, and has shunned publicity for some years. Stories of his eccentricities abound, and include discharging a firearm while in the studio with John Lennon and chasing Leonard Cohen with a loaded crossbow during the ill-fated sessions for Cohen's Death of a Ladies' Man album. He married Ronnie of the Ronettes in 1968 (her real name was Veronica Bennett). They divorced in 1974. In 2000 Ronnie Spector successfully sued him for over $2 million for breach of contract over unpaid royalties to the Ronettes. On February 3, 2003, Spector was arrested for investigation of homicide after the body of 40-year-old actress Lana Clarkson of Los Angeles.
Politics of Sri Lanka - Sri Lanka's two major political parties--the UNP and the PA--embrace democratic values, international nonalignment, and encouragement of Sinhalese culture. Past differences between the two on foreign and economic policy have narrowed. The SLFP, however, envisions a broader role for the state in general. Sri Lanka has a multi-party democracy that enjoys considerable stability despite relatively high levels of political violence. LTTE terrorist activities, generally aimed at destabilizing Sri Lanka politically and economically, have included assassination of politicians--killing the Industrial Development Minister by suicide bombing in June 2000; the December 1999 attempted assassination of current President Kumaratunga; bombing of economic targets such as the central bank in January 1996, the World Trade Center in October 1997, and the airport in July 2001; as well as attacks on Buddhist religious sites: in January.
Ne Win - by the Japanese forces to command the Burmese Independent Army (BIA). He chose a new name, Ne Win, and by 1943 he was the head of the BIA. The Japanese actions in Burma worked to alienate the nationalists. Towards the end of the war, in December 1944, the BIA turned against the Japanese following the British invasion. Ne Win remained in command and was quick to establish links with the British - attending the Kandy meeting and heading the anti-Communist operations later in the year in the Pyinmana area. When the war ended the country established a democratic government under U Nu, but the state was fatally riven with political stresses. Aung San was killed in 1947, and following independence on January 4, 1948 there were uprisings in the army and.
Muttiah Muralitharan - play test cricket. In 2002, Wisden named him as the greatest spinner of all time. He was born in Kandy, the eldest of four sons to father Muttiah Sinnasmy. At the age of nine he went to St Anthony's College. He made his test debut against Australia at Colombo in the Australian cricket tour of Sri Lanka, 1992 and ODI debut against India also at Colombo (at the same ground) in 1993. Muralitharan's bowling action is highly controversial amongst many observers of cricket, as to some it appears that it contravenes the laws of the game by straightening the arm in the course of the delivery. The controversy came to a head after Australian umpire Darrell Hair called a "no ball" for an illegal action seven times during the Boxing Day.
