Kobo Abe - Kobo Abe Kobo Abe (安部公房, 1924 - 1993) was a Japanese author. He was born in Tokyo, grew up in Manchuria and graduated in 1948 with a medical degree from Tokyo Imperial University on the condition that he wouldn't practice. He published his first novel in 1948 and worked as an avant-garde novelist and playwright, but it wasn't until he published The Woman in the Dunes in 1960 that he won widespread international acclaim. In the 1960s, he collaborated with Japanese director Hiroshi Teshigahara in adapting to film The Pitfall, The Woman in the Dunes, The Face of Another and The Ruined Map. Abe's surreal and often nightmarish explorations of the individual in contemporary society earned him comparisons to Kafka and his influence extended well beyond.
Kukai - Kukai Kūkai (空海) or Kobo-Daishi (弘法大師) , 774—835 CE: Japanese monk, scholar, and artist, founder of the Shingon or “True Word” school of Buddhism. Kūkai's family were aristocratic, and being a gifted child he was sent to university were he studied the Chinese_classics, became acquainted with Tantric_Buddhism. In particular he had discovered the Dainichikyo, or Maha Vairochana Sutra. However he was unable to a suitable teacher to explain it to him. In 804 he travelled managed to be included in a diplomatic mission to China, perhaps with the help of the Emperor Kanmu. Teshigahara Hiroshi - Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and went on to direct his first film, The Pitfall, in collaboration with author Kobo Abe and musician Toru Takemitsu in 1962. The film won the NHK New Director's award, and throughout the 1960s, Teshigahara continued to collaborate on films with Abe and Takemitsu while simultaneously pursuing his interest in Ikebana and sculpture on a professional level.
