Kofun - Kofun Kofun is an era in Japan from around A.D. 250 to A.D.538. The Kofun period (ca. A.D. 250- 538) takes its name, which means old tomb (古墳 kofun) from the culture's rich funerary rituals and distinctive earthen mounds. The mounds contained large stone burial chambers, many of which were shaped like keyholes and some of which were surrounded by moats. By the late Kofun period, the distinctive burial chambers, originally used by the ruling elite, also were built for commoners. During the Kofun period, a highly aristocratic society with militaristic rulers developed. Its horse-riding warriors wore armor, carried swords and other weapons, and used advanced military methods like those of Northeast Asia. Evidence of these advances is seen in funerary figures (called haniwa; literally, clay.

Art and architecture of Japan - culture. In architecture, Japanese preferences for natural materials and an interaction of interior and exterior space are clearly expressed. Japanese art is characterized by unique polarities. In the ceramics of the prehistoric periods, for example, exuberance was followed by disciplined and refined artistry. Another instance is provided by two 16th-century structures that are poles apart: Katsura Palace is an exercise in simplicity, with an emphasis on natural materials, rough and untrimmed, and an affinity for beauty achieved by accident; Toshogu Mausoleum is a rigidly symmetrical structure replete with brightly colored relief carvings covering every visible surface. Japanese art, valued not only for its simplicity but also for its colorful exuberance, has considerably influenced 19th-century Western painting and 20th-century Western architecture. Magatama - graves as offerings to deities (see grave goods). They continue to be popular with the ruling elites throughout the Kofun Period of Japan, and are often romanicised as being indicative of the Yamato Dynasty of Japan. Some consider them to be an Imperial symbol, although in fact ownership was widespread throughout all the chieftainships of the Kofun Period Japan. Magatama are believed to have come from the Asian continent through Korea, where they are known as Kokkok. The Korean Kokkok are pretty much inditinguishable from their Japanese contemporaries, a fact which suggests that during this period Japan was closely engaged politacally and economically with the Asian continent through the Korean Peninsula..

Yamato - or the Spirit of Yamato is used colloquially in a nostalgic way by conservative Japanese to refer to a mysterious Golden Age of Japanese Culture when life was simple and people were honest and worked hard. The Kofun Period of Japanese culture is also sometimes called the Yamato Period by Western Scholars, since this local Chieftain ship eventually rose up to become the Imperial Dynasty at the end of the Kofun Period. Japanese archaeologists find this a little predeterministic and emphasise the fact that in the early half of the Kofun Period other regional Chieftainships, such as Kibi near modern day Okayama were in close contention for the crown. The Okinawans sometimes use it to refer to Mainland Japan in contrast to Okinawa, which is Uchinaa in their dialect..
