Kristian Birkeland - Kristian Birkeland Kristian Birkeland (1867-1917) was born in Oslo and wrote his first scientific paper at the age of 18. He organized several expeditions to Norway's high-latitude regions where he established a network of observatories under the auroral regions to collect magnetic field data. The results of the Norwegian Polar Expedition conducted from 1899 to 1900 contained the first determination of the global pattern of electric currents in the polar region from ground magnetic field measurements. The discovery of X-rays inspired Birkeland to develop vacuum chambers to study the influence of cathode rays on magnets. Lauri Kristian Relander - Lauri Kristian Relander Lauri Kristian Relander (May 31, 1883 - February 9, 1942) President of Finland 1925-1931. Relander was born in Kurkijoki, Finland. He studied agricultural chemistry but when his efforts to find a senior lecturer position failed, he became politically active in the Finnish Agrarian Party. He was elected into parliament 1910. By 1917 he had become one of the leaders of the party. After independence, his political career went well but in 1920s he did not have enough support in his own party to become a minister. He became his party’s presidential candidate just days before the election and was elected mainly because he was seen as alternative to Risto Ryti. Johan Vilhelm Snellman - philosopher and statesman. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, where his father Kristian Henrik Snellman, was a ship's captain. His mother Maria Magdalena died when he was only eight years old. Snellman was a professor at the University of Helsinki, when he in 1863 was called to serve as a senator, a cabinet post in the Grand duchy of Finland. It was a role he served with distinction until resigning in 1868 and it had been thanks to him that, in 1865, the Markka was introduced as the currency in Finland. Black metal music - Norwegian culture and to effect a return to the nation's Norse roots. The movement was largely directed by an 'Inner Circle', made up of Aarseth and a few close friends, from the basement of Aarseth's record store, Helvete (Hell). That location also housed a recording studio, where records were made by Mayhem and a number of other bands that were signed to Aarseth's independent label, Deathlike Silence.
