Kurt von Schleicher - Kurt von Schleicher Kurt von Schleicher (7 April 1882 - 30 June 1934) was a German general and the last Chancellor of the Weimar Republic. Schleicher became a major figure behind the scenes in the government of Heinrich Brüning between 1930 and 1932, serving as an aide to General Wilhelm Groener, the Minister of Defense. Eventually, Schleicher, who established a close relationship with President Paul von Hindenburg, came into conflict with Brüning and Groener, and his intrigues were largely responsible for their fall in May of 1932. Schleicher became Minister of Defense under the new Chancellor, Franz von Papen, whom he had hand-picked, but the two came into conflict, and when, following the November 1932 elections, the government could not maintain a working parliamentary majority, Papen.

Franz von Papen - Franz von Papen Franz von Papen (October 29, 1879 - May 2, 1969) was a German politician and diplomat of the Weimar Republic and Third Reich, whose policies were important in bringing about the rise to power of Adolf Hitler. Born to a wealthy Catholic family in Westphalia, Papen served as a soldier on the Turkish front in World War I. Returning, he entered politics, joining the Catholic Centre Party, in which the monarchist Papen formed part of the far right wing. On June 1, 1932, he was plucked from relative obscurity when President Paul von Hindenburg chose him as Chancellor to replace Heinrich Brüning, the leader of Papen's own party. This was largely due to the influence of General Kurt von Schleicher, at the time Hindenburg's.
Gleichschaltung - example by instituting the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs under Hanns Kerrl. Organizations that the administration could not eliminate, such as the schools, came under its direct control. In a more specific sense, Gleichschaltung refers to the legal measures taken by the government after Adolf Hitler became Reichskanzler. In this sense, the term was used by the Nazis themselves. On January 30, 1933, Hitler was appointed Reichskanzler by Reichspräsident Paul von Hindenburg after the NSDAP had gained the largest share of the popular vote in the two Reichstag general elections of 1932. After that, the new government enacted a number of measures in quick succession (refer to the following links for greater detail): One day after the Reichstag fire on February 27, 1933, Reichspräsident Hindenburg, acting at Hitler's request, issued the Reichstag.
Gregor Strasser - Strasser was a committed socialist and social radical as was Ernst Roehm. Strasser saw a need for redistribute wealth in Germany and like Roehm, opposed Hitler's policy of catering to the country's major industrialists such as Emil Kirdorf, although it should be noted that he received no small amount of personal financial assistance from industrial "contacts" and various "gentleman clubs". His outspoken views led Kirdorf and others to reject the party for a time, causing a deep rift with Hitler and other leaders of the party. In 1932 he was placed in charge of party organization. In December 1932, Paul von Hindenburg invited Kurt von Schleicher to become chancellor and invited Strasser to be his deputy. Schleicher hoped that in bringing Strasser in he might pull with him the entire left.

Born January 9, 1890 in Berlin-Moabit, he was forced to emigrate from Nazi Germany in 1933 because of his Jewish ancestry and his political and moral convictions. He committed suicide in Hindås near Göteborg on December 21, 1935 while in Swedish exile. Tucholsky, like other writers and artists of the Weimar era, had the same combination of mordant objectivity and political insight that made them mock the illusions of those who thought that everything would somehow work out for the best. His poem about the production of Danton's Death, a nineteenth century warhorse restaged in Berlin in the early twenties, only a few years after the German Revolution of 1918-19 was brought to.
