Simon Magus - Simon Magus Simon Magus, also known as Simon the Magician, Simon the Sorcerer and Simon of Gitta, was a Samaritan (Proto-)Gnostic. The ancient Gnostic sect of Simonianism believed that he was God in human form. Almost all of the surviving sources for the life and thought of Simon Magus are contained in Christian works, in the Acts of the Apostles, in patristic works (Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, Hippolytus) and in the apocryphal Acts of Peter. The different sources for information on Simon contain quite different pictures of him, so much so that it has been questioned whether they all refer to the same person. Assuming all references are to the same person, the earliest reference to him is the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 8. This tells of.
Magus - Magus Magi were Zoroastrian astrologer-priests from ancient Persia. The word magi is plural; the singular is magus. Magus is also a word for a magician, wizard, or sorceror, especially one of experience and accomplishment. According to Herodotus, the Magi were the sacred caste of the Medes. They organised Persian society after the fall of Assyria and Babylon. Their power was curtailed by Cyrus, the founder of the Persian Empire, and by his son Cambyses II; the Magi revolted against Cambyses and set up a rival claimant to the throne, one of their own, who took the name of Smerdis. Smerdis and his forces were defeated by the Persians under Darius I. The sect of the Magi continued in Persia, though its influence was limited after this.

Illuminati - suppressed in 1635. A century later, another, more obscure body of Illuminés came to light in the south of France in 1722, and appears to have lingered till 1794, having affinities with those known contemporaneously in Britain as 'French Prophets', an offshoot of the Camisards. Of different class were the so-called Illuminati, better known as Rosicrucians, who claimed to originate in 1422, but rose into notice in 1537; a secret society, that claimed to combine with the mysteries of alchemy the possession of esoteric principles of religion. Their positions are embodied in three anonymous treatises of 1614, mentioned in Richard and Giraud, Dictionnaire universel des sciences ecclésiastiques. Paris 1825. A short-lived movement of republican freethinkers, to whose adherents the name Illuminati was given, (but who called themselves "Perfectibilists'), was founded on.

Gnosticism - Demiurge, who believe himself to be the sole creator of the universe and the exclusive ruler of this world. The "original sin" thus is in a gnostic context the "original enlightenment", and not an act of sin at all. They also learn that Seth, the third son of Adam, was introduced to the gnostic teachings by both his father and his mother, and that this knowledge has been preserved throughout creation. It should be noted that the gnostics perceived the Old Testament as myth, and thus subject to interpretation. Lifestyle Some Gnostic sects were Christians who embraced mystical theories of the true nature of Jesus and/or the Christ which were out of step with the teachings of orthodox Christian faith. For example, Gnostics generally taught docetism, the belief that Jesus did.

Angel - particular individuals and even the formation of the parts of animals such as they are—is brought about entirely through the mediation of angels. For all forces are angels! How blind, how perniciously blind are the naive?! If you told someone who purports to be a sage of Israel that the Deity sends an angel who enters a woman's womb and there forms an embryo, he would think this a miracle and accept it as a mark of the majesty and power of the Deity—despite the fact that he believes an angel to be a body of fire one third the size of the entire world. All this, he thinks, is possible for God. But if you tell him that God placed in the sperm the power of forming and demarcating these.

Ars Magica - around 1300 AD. Player characters play either wizards (magi, sing: magus (male), maga (female)) or companions (comites, sing. comes). The basic premise is that wizards did live in the Middle Ages, and clustered in specific citadels (called covenants), often built in places of power. Companions are selected skilled warriors and rangers which help wizards run these covenants. The game system is rather innovative, with everything based on d10. The core of the system (not surprisingly) is the magic system: one or more of five actions (create, command, perceive, change, destroy) are combined with multiple objects (fire, water, air, earth, plant, mind, images, animals, magic force....) to achieve countless effects. Magi have a limited number of spells they learn, but can innovate and create new effects on the spur of the moments.

The Silver Chalice - Costain. It tells a story about the Holy Grail, the "silver chalice" of the title, the apostle Luke, and Simon Magus. It was made into a 1954 movie that marked the rather unpromising début of Paul Newman as "Basil the Defender," whose task was to defend the Holy Grail. It also features Virginia Mayo, and Jack Palance as Simon Magus, the villain. Victor Saville was the director. Apart from being Paul Newman's first picture, this sword and sandal movie that would be a Biblical epic is remembered chiefly for the curious domes in the unusual set designs; and for its film score by Franz Waxman, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Paul Newman is apparently not proud of his performance. When the film was broadcast on television in 1966, he.

Simony - of paying for offices or positions in the hierarchy of a church, named after Simon Magus, who appears in the Acts of the Apostles 8:18-24. Simon Magus offers the disciples of Christ payment for the power to perform miracles. The intertwining of temporal with spiritual authority in the Middle Ages caused endless problems with simony and accusations of simony. Secular rulers wanted to employ the educated and centrally organized clergy in their administrations, and often treated their spiritual positions as adjuncts to the secular administrative roles..
