Midas - Midas Midas was a character in Greek mythology, who is most recognized for his ability to turn anything he touched into gold. He was King of Pessinus, a city in Phrygia in Asia Minor. As a child, he was adopted by Gordias and Cybele. He was known for being a hedonist, and an excellent rose gardener. He had one son, Lityerses. Historically it is known that Midas was king of Phrygia in the 8th century BC. He was the son of Gordius, a poor countryman, who was taken by the people and made king, in obedience to the command of the oracle, which had said that their future king should come in a wagon. While the people were deliberating, Gordius with his wife and son came.
John Lyly - two petitions, transcripts of which are extant among the Harleian Manuscripts, are undated, but in the first of them he speaks of having been ten years hanging about the court in hope of preferment, and in the second he extends the period to thirteen years. It may be conjectured with great probability that the ten years date from 1579, when Edmund Tylney was appointed master of the revels with a tacit understanding that Lyly was to have the next reversion of the post. "I was entertained your Majestie's servaunt by your own gratious favor," he says, "strengthened with condicions that I should ayme all my courses at the Revells (I dare not say with a promise, but with a hopeful Item to the Revercion) for which these ten yeres I have.
Gordias - in the mythic period of prehistory were alternatly named Gordias and Midas. Myth gathered round both names: Gordias was a Phrygian farmer. An eagle landed on his plough; a sign he interpreted to mean he would one day become a king. The oracle of Sabazios (identified by Greeks with Zeus) confirmed his future in the following manner: the Phrygians, finding themselves without a king, consulted the oracle and were told to acclaim as king the first man to ride up to the temple in a cart. It was the farmer Gordias who appeared, riding in his ox-cart. Gordias founded the city of Gordium, which became the Phrygian capital. His ox-cart was preserved in the acropolis. Its yoke was secured with an intricate knot called the Gordian Knot. Legend said that he.

Anchor - the anchors of the ancient Greeks, which, according to Apollonius Rhodius and Stephen of Byzantium, were formed of stone; and Athenaeus states that they were sometimes made of wood. Such anchors held the vessel merely by their weight and by the friction along the bottom. Iron was afterwards introduced for the construction of anchors, and an improvement was made by forming them with teeth or ``flukes'' to fasten themselves into the bottom; whence the words odontes and dentes are frequently taken for anchors in the Greek and Latin poets. The invention of the teeth is ascribed by Pliny to the Tuscans; but Pausanias gives the credit to Midas, king of Phrygia. Originally there was only one fluke or tooth, whence anchors were called eterostomoi; but a second was added, according to.

He states that far west of the Ocean there lies a group of islands whose inhabitants are red-skinned and whose hair is like that of the horse. (Christopher Columbus described the Indians similarly.) A fragmentary work of Theophrastus of Lesbos tells about the colonies of Atlantis in the sea. Hesiod wrote that the garden of the Hesperides was on an island in the sea where the sun sets. Pliny the Elder recorded that this land was 12,000 km distant from Cadiz, and Uba, a Numidian king intended to establish a stock farm of purple Murex there. Diodorus declares that the ancient Phoenicians and Etruscans knew.

Big Wing - suggestion has been put forward that Big Wing was just one element in Dowding and Park's removal. Dowding's apparent inability to get to grips with the night bombing threat has been offered as a primary reason for his dismissal. Big Wing made a last appearance as a defensive formation in paper exercises run by Leigh-Mallory as commander 11 Group in January 1941. The intention was to prove the superiority of large formations using the circumstances of an actual attack on Kenley, Biggin Hill and Hornchurch sectors on 6 September 1940. Leigh-Mallory completely mismanaged the operation, permitting the raid to progress unhindered and resulting in Kenley and Biggin Hill being 'bombed' while their aircraft were still on the ground. One of Park's former controllers explained Leigh-Mallory's mistakes to him. He replied that.

Carol Ann Duffy - successful children's collections include 'Meeting Midnight' (1999) and 'The Oldest Girl in the World' (2000). 'The World's Wife' (1999) saw her retelling famous stories and fables - Midas, King Kong, Elvis - as wry and exuberant 'feminist' documents from the point of view of real or imagined women. Her most recent book 'Feminine Gospels' (2002) continues this vein, showing an increased interest in long narrative poems, accessible in style and often surreal in their imagery. She is one of the few poets in the UK to combine academic integrity with accessibility and popularity..

Sabazios - Early conflict between Sabazios and his followers and the indigenous Mother Goddess of Phrygia (Cybele) is reflected in Homer's brief reference to the youthful feats of Priam, who aided the Phrygians in their battles with Amazons. An aspect of the compromise religious settlement, similar to the other such mythic adjustments throughout Aegean culture, can be read in the later Phrygian King Gordias' adoption 'with Cybele' of Midas. Later Greek mythographers reduced Cybele's role to 'wife,' but initially Gordias will have been ruling in the Goddess's name, as her visible representative. One of the Mother Goddess's creatures was the Lunar Bull. Sabazios' relations with the goddess may be surmised in the way that his horse places a hoof on the head of the bull, in a Roman marble relief at the Boston.
