SlashCode - SlashCode Slash (a backronym for Slashdot Like Automated Story-telling Homepage), (often incorrectly called Slashcode, which is the name of the website and SourceForge project), is the open source collection of Perl scripts which runs Slashdot, one of the oldest and most popular collaborative weblogs around. Slashcode was originally written by Rob Malda, and is now maintained by Jamie McCarthy and Chris Nandor, among others. Slash is designed to be run on top of the Apache web server with a MySQL database for data storage and retrieval. It runs Slashdot (which has spawned many imitators) and is released under terms of the Free Software Foundation's GNU General Public License. Slash (born July 23, 1965 as "Saul Hudson" in Hampstead, London, England) was the former lead guitarist of metal band Guns 'n Roses. He was raised in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire until the age of 11 when his family moved to the United States. Having developed an interest in music and playing the guitar, he joined Guns 'n Roses. He left the band in 1996 after disagreeing with Axl Rose over musical direction. Slashdot trolling phenomena - bird' trolls and related trolls were a common variant, where an ASCII art representation of some offensive image, often related to shock sites (in this case a crude ASCII representation of a bird perched on an erect penis) is posted in the body, with a nonsensical or provocative subject line. A link to the original image of the penis bird is given below. Homosexuality Homosexuality is one of the most versatile and so common trolling devices utilised. In its simplest form it may be used on its own in the form of a homophobic insult or as a feature of a pornographic troll featuring common Slashdot topics and celebrities. Lameness filter - Lameness filters are textbased filters used by SlashCode-based websites to stop junk comments from being posted in response to stories. Lameness filters include: Too many junk characters Too many capital letters Too much repetition ASCII art Comments which are too short or long. Using a combination of tags that try to break web pages. Too short lines of text Too long lines of text Most of these can be easily circumvented if necessary, but they usually keep most junk from being posted on sites.
