Kent State shootings - May 1. The Ohio state governor had ordered the National Guard onto campus in response to the burning of the ROTC building by arsonists the previous day. The militia were wearing gas masks in the hot sun (obscuring their vision and causing heat exhaustion) and had little training in riot control. The National Guard was on campus for hours, clashing several times with protestors. The National Guard fired tear gas cannisters and some students threw rocks in response. At one point, the Guardsmen fired a volley of rifle fire. Only one of the four students killed was participating in the protest. Ironically one of the students killed, William Schroeder, who was not even involved in the demonstration, was a member of the campus ROTC chapter. Several other students were also wounded.

Kidinnu - school in the Babylonian city of Sippar in Akkad (now Abu Habbah, southwest of Baghdad, Iraq). Probably Kidinnu had made complex methods and equations for calculating the irregular movements of the Moon and other planets and specially of the Sun. Because he was not as attached as Greek astronomers to the constant velocity of planets he was able to get good approximations for their movements. For the Sun, the apparent angular velocity is a minimum in aphelion, when the Earth is farthest from it. So Kidinnu developed from Nabu-rimanni's System A the more refined system (now called System B) used by the Chaldean astronomers to describe more clearly the motions of the Sun and planets. This system used steadily increasing and decreasing values for the planetary positions, sometimes called the zigzag.
Kirkwood gap - period 4 years, which is one-third of the orbital period of Jupiter. Gaps were thought by Kirkwood to be caused by orbital resonances, i.e., by the gravitational perturbations from Jupiter. In other words, the idea is that if an asteroid happens to orbit three times around the Sun in the time it takes for Jupiter to orbit once, then the asteroid gets tugged out of that orbit. Maybe this would deorbit any asteroid near a gap and eventually make it collide with some planet or the Sun. The devil is in the details, though; long-term behaviour of asteroid orbits is difficult to predict, and according to this abstract, the motions of some 3:1 resonance asteroids don't look unstable at all.
