Verdana - Verdana Verdana is a highly legible sans-serif font commissioned by the Typography Group at Microsoft, and designed by Matthew Carter. Released in 1996, it has for some years been installed by default on all Macintosh and Windows computers. Being part of a "Web fonts" package that was downloadable for years from the Microsoft web page, most computers with Linux and other Unix-like operating systems have it installed as well. The font is generally regarded as the superlative font for on-screen reading, the primary purpose for which it was designed. Since it is installed on most of the world's computers, it is the obvious choice for the main text font for many major websites. Tahoma is a related typeface, that for all classification purposes is Verdana Narrow..
Frutiger - Frutiger is considered one of the classics of modern typography and forms the basis of many other modern typefaces, such as Bitstream Vera and Verdana. In the Bitstream font collection, a font family similar to Frutiger is named Humanist, with Humanist 777 equaling the original Frutiger typeface 'Frutiger 55'. Linotype, the original publisher of Frutiger has come out in 1999 with a revised version, Frutiger NEXT. Related articles Univers Typography.
Times New Roman - mid-1930s, also by Monotype; Times New Roman was the first TrueType version of Times, and differs from Times Roman in name (Linotype, Times' first licensee, owns the Times Roman trademark in the USA) and very slight differences in design. See also: Arial, Verdana.
Typeface - the 1450s until the middle of the 20th century. A few large fonts were made of wood, especially in the USA. This is known as wood type. There was a relatively brief overlapping period (ca. 1950s-1990s) where photographic technology, known as phototypesetting, was used; fonts came on rolls or discs of film. From the mid-1980s the move to digital typography has been relentless and the term font nowadays almost always refers to a computer file containing scalable, outline letterforms, usually in one of several common formats. Some fonts, such as Microsoft's Verdana are intended primarily for use on computer screens.
